Can you cancel GAMSTOP early?

No. GAMSTOP cannot remove anyone's exclusion early, whatever the reason. What you can shape is the day it ends: set your own rules now, or add a longer period if you want one.

No. GAMSTOP cannot cancel an exclusion early, whatever the reason. Six months, one year or five years: the minimum period you chose runs to its end. What you can still decide is what the day after it looks like.

This guide covers why there is no early exit, what you can change, and how to use the time that is left. Checked on 15 October 2026.

Why GAMSTOP has no early exit

GAMSTOP is the free self-exclusion scheme for online gambling in Great Britain. Every online gambling company licensed in Great Britain must be part of it. Those companies check GAMSTOP whenever you register or log in, and the ones you already have an account with check your status every day.

So the block does not sit with any one company: each of them has to check GAMSTOP. GAMSTOP itself says it cannot remove anyone's exclusion early, and that holds whatever the reason. It makes no difference if you picked the wrong period, signed up on a bad night or feel very different now.

Can you shorten it or switch to six months?

No. The periods are six months, one year, five years, and five years with auto-renewal. The one you chose is your minimum, and it cannot be cut short. Changes only go one way: you can add a longer period at any time.

If you are on five years with auto-renewal, a new five-year minimum starts after the five years unless you turn auto-renewal off in your account. That is only possible within the last six months of the five years.

What happens when the minimum period ends

Nothing happens on its own. GAMSTOP will not contact you when your minimum period expires, and if you do nothing, the exclusion stays in place for a further seven years. To lift it, you sign in to your GAMSTOP account, check that it has expired, and request removal by online chat or phone. A 24-hour cooling-off period follows. Do not contact GAMSTOP about removal before the period has expired.

What you can do with the time left

The end date cannot move. What that day looks like can be decided now, while things are calm. You don't have to quit. You have to be in control. Three decisions are enough:

  1. The amount before the app: decide how much you can spend in a week before you open any account again. A number, not a feeling.
  2. The time before the app: decide which days and for how long, before you log in.
  3. One person who knows: choose someone who gets to hear the real number.

Write the three down and read them again in your last month. If you would like the block to last longer, you can add a longer period at any time. With less than a month left, the new period can be any length. You do it in your account, without registering again.

If the wait feels hard

The National Gambling Helpline, run by GamCare, is on 0808 8020 133. It is free and confidential, and GamCare says it is available 24 hours a day, every day of the year. You can also use live chat or WhatsApp through GamCare. If it is urgent and you cannot get through, call Samaritans on 116 123. In an emergency, call 999.
